Take a paper straw and use it for a journey of creativity

Creation Station | Arts and Craft Activities for Kids | Indoor Activities For Kids | Half Term Activities For Kids | Rainy Day Activities For Kids | Recycled craft | 2 Minute Challenge (ish!)

A big warm welcome to you.  Here at Creation Station we have our creative challenge, and top tips. I'm setting my timer today we're going to be thinking about what you can do with a simple paper straw.

Well, of course, you can drink with it, but there's more exciting things that you can do. So, what we're going to do we need to learn how to cut. Many of you may already know how to cut, but if you have never cut before, I know, exciting skill. It's a great technique, you basically help your little one open and close your hand, like a crocodile, snap, snap, snap. You can use these fancy loop scissors and then they open close open close or you can use regular scissors open close open close and at the same time you give your little  one a paper straw, or a thin strip of cardboard. Open close.

It's so exciting, it actually doesn't matter how old you are and the reason, I've got my wooden box here. is because you then want to try and catch all of the little pieces in the box. So, if you have more than one child, somebody could be running around trying to catch the pieces as you cut. I missed that one and I missed that one.

As you cut the pieces and of course, you can think about different lengths, because I've been cutting all the same length. So, you can also talk about how big the pieces are. So, if they do fly around the room, that's OK.

You can then start to collect them or aim them into the box. So, if you do have old plastic straws lying around, obviously we don't don't use them anymore, but you might have some left in your cupboard.  They also work as well and it's that opening close every time your child closes, they get success but do be prepared, there will be a lot of cutting and sticking happening in your house once they've learned.

So, I've got my bits and pieces that I have cut, and a really good way of developing your child's concentration and hand to eye coordination is to get a simple pipe cleaner, and start to thread the straw onto the pipe cleaner and it does take quite a lot of concentrating.

So do enjoy doing that. You can also join one pipe cleaner to another by just simply twisting and creating much longer pipe cleaners
There's also things, other things that you can thread on, you might find some buttons around the house. They're always quite good fun to thread on. You might use this really nice shell. They're actually coconut shells and are on our store, and they can be threaded on as well to create all sorts of jewellery and  decorations around the house.  Things for books, things for cupboard doors. I'm sure your imagination will take you on a long journey with the lovely ideas.

So do feel free to share, your creations and if you want to join any of our Creation Station online classes.  Please do just visit our website The Creation Station.co.uk  Keep safe. Look after yourselves Bye.

Me and my children (age 5, and 1) both absolutely love creation station! It’s such a fun, relaxed environment where they can play, explore and get super messy whilst creating beautiful keepsakes to treasure forever! Mandy Stone who runs out local venue is amazing! Xmas craft session

This was our first mother and baby session since my little boy Archie was born at the end of June. With this rubbish Covid stopping so many if not all baby sessions that I was hopping to be able to take my little boy to whilst off on mat leave has stopped us. Creation station was lots of fun to socialise with other baby mother and also make memorable gifts for us to keep for his 1st Xmas. Alexis was very welcoming and helpful the whole time, we also enjoyed a cuppa tea and some cake in with the price which is brilliant. Hope to be able to attend lots more with my little boy soon. A big thank you !
