About Alix

A bit about me....

I'm Alix and I'm married to Ian. We were at primary school together, but got together again when we were at university! We have a man-child, Tom, who lives at home and is a primary school teacher. When Tom was little, there weren't many classes and clubs to go to, and the thought of having paint etc. in our tiny terraced house was terrifying, so his creative opportunities were limited to the garden in the summer, or those he did at pre-school. I know that if the Creation Station had existed then, I would probably have signed up for a whole year in one go!

What I did before I ran my own Creation Station

I was a primary school teacher from 1989 until Christmas 2019. During that time I taught every age from Reception to Year 6, and even ventured into a middle school where I taught English up to Year 9. During my early days, I also taught English as a foreign language to, mostly Japanese, adults during the summer breaks. I was at my last school for 25 years, and had steadily worked my way through the ranks to senior management and had responsibility for attendance, pastoral care and was a House Mistress. I also work alongside a charity called Hope4Malawi and have held talks in schools promoting their work. Ian and I have been involved in fundraising projects, and for our Silver wedding we travelled to Malawi to visit and teach in some of the schools.

Why I decided to run my own Creation Station

When I started teaching I said I didn’t want to be a full-time class teacher when I was 50. Ah, well, that time has come and gone, and I was part-time for the last 3 years of my teaching career, focussing on Maths, English and Art. Following my visit to Malawi in 2014 I came back with a different perspective on teaching, and there was a niggle in my mind that if I could just teach Art, and lose the pressures of accountability, marking, reporting etc., and concentrate on the fun and creative aspects of the job then I would have found my paradise! Sadly the funding wasn't available for me to be given that role in the school where I was. Fast forward to an article in the press at the start of 2019 about The Creation Station, a lot of research, a week of training, massive support from both Ian ( he took a week off work to do the training with me! ) and Tom…..and my new life began.

What I love about running my own Creation Station

Like teaching, every day is different as you never know what someone will create, and who you will meet. It's also something that Ian and I can do together - if you book one of our parties or classes you could get either or both of us !

Things I love doing

Reading ( chick-lit mostly ), me-time (  facials, massage, sparkly toes ), cinema ( I love the Silver screen shows! ), visiting art galleries....and last but not least having fun with my family and friends.

My favourite food

Ian has recently taken up baking, so it has to be his wonderful banana loaf. He also loves to barbeque from April to October, so we are treated to all sorts of amazing grills - including pizza from the pizza oven!

I also love any type of chocolate…and champagne ( hic! )

As a teacher and former NCT co-ordinator I know how important it is to encourage creativity from a young age. Being able to express ourselves through art is great for our mental wellbeing – whatever our age.

I really hope to meet you at one of my classes, Family fun events or at a party very soon.

We aren't strangers, just friends who haven't yet met.

Great Father’s Day keepsake experience

It was a great experience doing the Father’s Day coaster with Alix. We played around a bit at the start trying to do a hand and foot print. It was a lot of fun & great that now I have a keepsake of my sons feet on a coaster to give as presents.

Wizard Workshop

My 6 year old loved the online Wizard Workshop! You can tell Alix was a teacher as she has the ability to hold all the kids attention. They had great fun with the slime making and other crafts. It was very exciting to receive the box in advance and I think for 2.5 hours it was also great value for money.

Creative Crafters with Alix

I had a thoroughly enjoyable time doing some ‘grown up’ crafting on Wednesday night with Alix! Alix guided us through the book folding craft clearly and allowed us to take the time we needed to ensure we were pleased with our finished result. A lovely, sociable evening spent learning a new craft! Just what the doctor ordered. Thank you Alix.
