This fun activity is brought to you by our fab Halifax Creation Station franchise owner Claire O'Hara.
Claire runs award-winning arts and crafts classes, clubs, and parties in Halifax West Yorkshire.
Discover how to get your little ones printing with different things from around the house including …… vegetables!
This activity also helps your child meet the following Art objectives within the Key Stage 1 curriculum,:
• Use repeating or overlapping shapes.
• Mimic print from the environment (e.g. wallpapers).
• Use objects to create prints (e.g. fruit, vegetables or sponges).
• Press, roll, rub and stamp to make prints.
Printing allows children to explore colour, shape and texture. This activity also leads children to ask other questions, for example, what happens if print with a round shape, or use something with a hole in it? What things can I print with and what shapes or designs will they make? What is my favourite object to print with and why? This has now not only provided them with a creative experience but is also developing their critical thinking skills – asking questions and seeking out the answers!
So in one fell swoop by doing this activity you have taught several art objectives from the curriculum to your child in a really fun imaginative way and I call that a win for homeschooling mums and dads everywhere! You even have a great piece of your child’s art to stick on the fridge!
In Key Stage 2, children will begin to explore using more detailed printing blocks and how you can create finer details when printing. If you feel brave enough you can cut out patterns into potatoes and see what happens. You could also have a go at sticking string in different patterns to cardboard and printing with those – we feel that might be another video!
We hope you have a lot of fun creating your prints and do share any pictures of what you create. Here at The Creation Station we love to inspire your imaginations and hope that our videos put a bit of creative sparkle into home learning.
