Spooky Pumkins - grown up supervision required
You will need:
large round pumpkin; a tea light or candle; newspaper; felt pen; sharp knife; spoon.
Place the pumpkin on several layers of newspaper. With your felt pen draw a face on the side. Position the mouth high enough so that the candle will be seen.
An adult should take over at the cutting stage. Use your knife to cut out a lid around the pumpkin stem- this can be done in a zig - zag design. The opening should be large enough for your hand to fit in.
Dig out the seeds and stringy bits from the inside of the pumpkin with a spoon. Save these bits and see if you can find a tasty recipe for pumpkin pie or roasting you pumpkin seeds. Then it's time to get carving (again its best if adults do this bit but older children may be able to do this with careful supervision). It's best to use sawing strokes to carve out the face. When finished place the candle or tea light inside the pumpkin. When the candle is lit, close the lid. REMEMBER: keep lit Jack o'Lanterns well away from flammable objects and never leave them unattended.
Pumpkin Mask
You will need: pumpkin template; cardboard; orange paint or crayons; other collage materials to decorate.
This is a really easy way for younger kids to get creative and the finished items can be used as Halloween decorations. You can create your own pumpkin template or take a look on the web. Decorate with cut-out eyes and scary mouths.
Magical Potions
You will need; old storage jars, selection of safe objects, liquids and powders e.g.; washing up liquid, bubble mixture, raisin, talcum powder, toothpaste, hair gel, seeds, pine nuts etc.,
Children love the idea of shops and stalls- let them create a Potions bar and make up names for their ghoulish items. For instance
Witches teeth - pine nuts
Wizards Worms - spaghetti dyed with food colouring
Dried bat brains - raisins
Magic dust - sugar
You get the idea, and your children will love creating their own names, labels and mixtures. Just agree before hand what they can and can't use (I talk from experience when my Chanel No. 5 seemed to evaporate overnight!)
Witches Potions
You will need: a large pot; bicarbonate of soda; vinegar; green food colouring; a wooden spoon.
A simple way to play at being a witch for the day! Make your own bubbling potion by adding 3 teaspoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda and 1/4 of a cup of vinegar to a bowl with a few drops of food colouring. Watch the mixture bubble and hiss but be sure not to drink it!
Halloween Masks
You will need: newspaper; pens/pencils; scissors; cardboard; selection of paints, glitter, crepe paper, etc; elastic; hole punch or stapler.
Making masks is a fun way to add an individual touch to a Halloween costume. Ideas to consider include a bat shape mask, black cat, witch face and hat or devil with horns.
To make your chosen design, make a template on the newspaper and then use this pattern to cut out the shape on the cardboard. Decorate accordingly and either staple or tie on a length of elastic to secure the mask.
Magic Spells
You will need: sheets of white paper; silver and gold foil; scissors; glue; felt pens; cup of cold tea or coffee; pastry brush.
Wannabe witches or wizards can make up their own spells and commit them to paper! Get the children to come up with their own spells, perhaps they have a special wish they'd like to come true - they can use this as the basis of their spell.
Write the spell down on the paper and decorate it with cut-out pictures of moons, stars, cat's eyes and other magical symbols. Then comes the fun bit...brush the edges of the paper with cold tea or coffee and then wrinkle up the paper to make the spell look really faded and ancient.
Crazy Skeletons
You will need: Black card or thick paper; plenty of pipecleaners cut into suitable varying lengths; glue.
You can either use pipe cleaners as suggested above or different shaped dried pasta (such as small macaroni, lengths of linguine, or penne) painted white and arranged into skeleton shapes can also work well. Also white or coloured chalk works well on black paper- you can stop the chalk from smudging by spraying the picture with hairspray when it is finished.
With the various lengths of pipe cleaner, or pasta get the kids to create their very own skeletons, using the glue to stick them down onto the black card or thick paper.
Try drawing around each other on large rolls of wall paper and fill in the sections with drawings on bones!
